Belfast, la película más personal de Kenneth Branagh hasta la fecha, compite en las categorías de Mejor Película, Mejor Director y Guion Original. El elenco también obtuvo nominaciones, incluyendo nominaciones a Mejor Actor de Reparto para Jamie Dornan y Ciarán Hinds, Mejor Actriz de Reparto para Caitríona Balfe, Mejor Actor / Actriz Joven por Jude Hill y Mejor Reparto de Actuación. La película también acumuló nominaciones para cinematografía, diseño de producción y edición.

A pesar de ser una de las últimas películas que se proyectaron para los críticos, Amor sin Barreras / West Side Story, de Spielberg, obtuvo nominaciones como Mejor Película y por su dirección. Ariana Debose y Rita Moreno obtuvieron nominaciones a Mejor Actriz de Reparto, mientras que la debutante Rachel Zegler está nominada a Mejor Actor / Actriz Joven. Amor sin barreras / West Side Story también consiguió nominaciones por su reparto además de por su guion, diseño de vestuario, diseño de producción, edición y cinematografía.

Duna / Dune y The Power of the Dog obtuvieron diez nominaciones cada una. Licorice Pizza y Nightmare Alley, que también fue una de las últimas películas que se proyectaron para los críticos, obtuvieron ocho nominaciones cada una, mientras que Rey Richard: Una familia ganadora / King Richard y Don’t Look Up obtuvieron seis nominaciones.

Hubo algunos olvidos notables. El aclamado drama de Rebecca Hall, Passing, no consiguió ni una sola nominación, mientras que Judi Dench, quien ganó elogios por su trabajo en Belfast, y Penélope Cruz, otra favorita de la crítica por su papel en Madres paralelas / Parallel Mothers, fueron excluidas. Por el contrario, Nicolas Cage fue un nominado sorpresa por su trabajo en la pequeña película independiente Pig.

Los ganadores serán revelados en la gala de los Critics Choice Awards repleta de estrellas organizada por Taye Diggs y Nicole Byer, que se transmitirá en vivo por The CW y TBS el domingo 9 de enero de 7:00 a 10:00 pm ET.
